GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman quarterback Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) threw for 163 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start, and junior tailback Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) gained 186 yards on 31 carries to become Gettysburg's seventh 2,000-yard rusher in a 31-14 win over Denison in non-conference action Saturday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

One week after tying a school record with five touchdown passes in relief, Flynn got the start and completed 13 of 23 passes. He also carried the ball six times for 26 yards. Sturges went over 150 yards for the third consecutive game and had his 10th career 100-yard day. By the end of the game, he moved past Paul Martin into sixth on the Gettysburg career rushing list with 2,149 yards. Sturges is now 598 yards away from Shannon Forsythe, who ranks fifth.

The Bullets (2-2) took advantage of an interception and two fumble recoveries while not turning the ball over to take a 28-7 halftime lead. As a team, Gettysburg made seven tackles for 30 yards in losses. Senior defensive end Stevenson Foote (Huntingtown, Md./Calvert) and sophomore defensive end Josh Jerrold (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury East) tied for the team-high with 1.5 tackles for loss each.

Senior halfback Dusty Green (Idaville, Pa./Bermudian Springs) made seven catches for 95 yards and scored two receiving touchdowns for the second week in a row. Denison senior running back Fred Lee gained 135 yards on the ground and scored the game's first touchdown.

Denison (0-3) took the opening kickoff and ran Lee twice for nine yards. On third-and-1, he broke up the middle for a 53-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Gettysburg responded with a six-play, 73-yard drive capped by a two-yard run by Sturges. On Sturges' second rush of the game, he ripped off a career-high 53-yard run to go over 2,000 career yards. The Bullets forced a punt in the next Big Red possession and then put together their longest drive of the season, a 16-play, 95-yard effort that covered 5:47 and culminated in a seven-yard touchdown pass from Flynn to Green late in the first quarter.

The two hooked up again on the next Gettysburg drive, and the Bullets added an insurance touchdown with 50 seconds to play before halftime after junior Hunter McMillan (Middletown, Del./Wilmington Friends) recovered a fumbled punt. Three plays later, Flynn hit senior wide receiver Spencer Davidson (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) for a 13-yard touchdown. Davidson has two catches in the last two games, both of which have gone for scores. Gettysburg scored two touchdowns off of Denison fumbles. Sophomore defensive end Conor Quinn (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) sacked Big Red sophomore quarterback Brian Herbe causing a fumble, which Quinn recovered in the first quarter leading to Green's second score.

Gettysburg opened the second half with possession and went three-and-out, but the Bullets stopped Denison on fourth down in each of its next three drives. Bullet opponents are now 1-for-11 (.091) on fourth down this season. The second of those stops came at the end of a seven-play, 71-yard drive by the Big Red. Facing fourth-and-goal from the Gettysburg four, sophomore running back Jon Berg went around the right end, but was chased down by Foote before he could reach the goal line.

Denison managed a score on its first possession of the fourth quarter. The Big Red covered 80 yards in 12 plays, and Herbe hit sophomore wide receiver Peter Jarowey for a six-yard score.

The Bullets finish the 2006 non-conference schedule 2-2 and head into a bye week. The team will be back in action in two weeks, when Gettysburg travels to Westminster, Md., on Oct. 7 to take on McDaniel. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
